Playing Chess in Lucerne: Clubs and History

Lucerne has played organized chess since 1875: that year, the Schachgesellschaft Luzern, founded a year earlier, adopted its current name, and it is still active today with a team in the top Swiss league. This guide collects what is actually accessible in today's club scene. Where something could not be verified, it is not listed here.

Chess clubs in Lucerne

The Innerschweizerischer Schachverband (Central Switzerland Chess Federation) runs the clubs in the region. The following selection shows clubs whose game night is publicly listed. A dash means the club does not publish the time permanently, so it's worth checking the club's website.

Club District Game night
Schachgesellschaft Luzern – Tuesday from 7:30 pm (Restaurant Guggi)
Schachklub Tribschen Luzern Horw Wednesday from 7:30 pm (Restaurant Eule)

The complete list of all member clubs is kept by the Innerschweizerischer Schachverband. Please check each club's website for current dates – game nights regularly shift during school holidays; the Schachgesellschaft Luzern, for example, takes a break during the summer holidays.

A note for a first visit: the Schachgesellschaft Luzern has around 60 members of all playing strengths, age groups and nationalities and explicitly invites people to drop by with no obligation. Schachklub Tribschen meets at Restaurant Eule in Horw and, alongside the adult evening, offers its own youth training at the Villa Schröder.

Playing chess outdoors: chess tables and meeting spots

A municipal directory of public outdoor chess tables could not be confirmed for Lucerne. The most reliable way to find an open game remains one of the two club evenings – Tuesdays at the Schachgesellschaft, Wednesdays at Tribschen.

Anyone wanting to play on the go is best served by a foldable travel set that fits in any bag and is ready to use at almost any table.

Tournaments and open events

In 2021, the Schachgesellschaft Luzern fielded an eight-player first team that competed in the top Swiss league (NLA) – a remarkable level for a club of this size. The Innerschweizerischer Schachverband also organizes the regional championships and league competitions in which Lucerne's clubs take part with their teams.

Anyone entering a tournament for the first time should know beforehand what equipment is required. The dimensions are not a matter of taste but are regulated – see our article on the official tournament chess standards.

Chess for children and teenagers

Schachklub Tribschen offers its own youth chess training on Wednesdays from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at the Villa Schröder in Horw – an hour before the adult evening at Restaurant Eule, so the two sessions are easy to combine.

Getting started at home requires little at first: a board of a sensible size and pieces that smaller hands can grip well. Which square size suits which king height is covered in our article on chessboard size.

Lucerne and chess history

Chess in Lucerne has a long prehistory, which club chroniclers trace back to the 13th century – what is documented in any case is that regular playing circles met in the 19th century, long before a formal club existed. In 1875 the present-day club took the name Schachgesellschaft Luzern, a year after its actual founding in 1874; the oldest surviving club statutes date from 1878.

Since then, the club has survived two world wars and, most recently, the pandemic-related break in 2020/21 before play resumed. With a team in the Nationalliga A, the Schachgesellschaft Luzern still belongs to the country's sporting elite today, around 150 years after its founding – unusual for a club with around 60 members.
