Playing Chess in Graz: Clubs, Tournaments and History

Graz is home to Austria's oldest chess club still in operation: the Grazer Schachgesellschaft was founded in 1877 at the Cafe zur Post and still plays every week. This guide collects what is actually accessible in today's club scene. Where something could not be verified, it is not listed here.

Chess clubs in Graz

The Steirischer Schachverband (Styrian Chess Federation) runs the city's clubs. The following selection shows clubs whose club night is publicly listed. A dash means the club does not publish the time permanently, so it's worth checking the club's website.

Club District Club night
Grazer Schachgesellschaft Eggenberg Tuesday from 7:00 pm (Gasthaus Rudolf)
Grazer Schachfreunde – Tuesday from 7:00 pm (Hotel Alter Telegraf)
Schachklub Styria TU Graz – Monday from 7:00 pm (Bar28)

The complete list of all member clubs is kept by the Steirischer Schachverband. Please check each club's website for current dates – club nights regularly shift during school holidays.

A note for a first visit: the Grazer Schachgesellschaft, founded in 1877 with around 20 members at the Cafe zur Post, is considered Austria's oldest active chess club and today meets at the Gasthaus Rudolf in Eggenberg. Grazer Schachfreunde (founded 1920) play at the Hotel Alter Telegraf on Grabenstraße, Schachklub Styria TU Graz (founded 1928) at Bar28 – both field teams in the Bundesliga Mitte and the state league and are among the larger clubs in Austria.

Playing chess outdoors: chess tables and meeting spots

A municipal directory of public chess tables, as exists in some other cities, could not be confirmed for Graz. The most reliable way to find an open game remains one of the club nights – especially on Mondays and Tuesdays, when three clubs are ready to play at the same time.

Anyone wanting to play on the go is best served by a foldable travel set that fits in any bag and is ready to use at almost any table. Anyone wanting to drop by as a guest will find comparatively many opportunities for a first game in Graz, with three active club nights a week – from the tradition-rich Grazer Schachgesellschaft in Eggenberg to the two large university and city clubs, each of which uses its own venue as a clubhouse.

Tournaments and open events

Grazer Schachfreunde and Schachklub Styria TU Graz play their team matches in the Bundesliga Mitte, the state league and several city league and divisional competitions that the Steirischer Schachverband organizes over the season. In 2022, the Grazer Schachgesellschaft celebrated its 145th anniversary with its own jubilee tournament in December – a date that has since returned regularly to the club calendar.

Anyone entering a tournament for the first time should know beforehand what equipment is required. The dimensions are not a matter of taste but are regulated – see our article on official tournament chess standards.

Chess for children and teenagers

The Grazer Schachgesellschaft offers training for children and teenagers on Fridays in the Schutzengelsaal of the Schutzengelkirche in Eggenberg, plus an open training session on Wednesdays for advanced juniors and adults, with a free taster session. Grazer Schachfreunde train their young players on Fridays from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the Karmeliterhof – a fixed, recurring session during term time.

Getting started at home requires little at first: a board of a sensible size and pieces that smaller hands can grip well. Which square size suits which king height is covered in our article on chessboard size.

Anyone wanting to bring their child for the first time will find fixed, recurring sessions at both clubs rather than a one-off taster – a short message beforehand helps to get placed straight into the right training group. The free trial session at the Grazer Schachgesellschaft on Wednesdays lowers the barrier to entry even further, as no prior club membership is required.

Graz and chess history

On 12 December 1877, a small circle of around 20 players gathered at the Cafe zur Post to found the Grazer Schachgesellschaft – to this day the oldest continuously active chess club in Austria. The early members met in typical coffee-house fashion, among other places at the Cafe Erzherzog Johann, the Thonethof and the legendary Cafe Nordstern, where games were played regularly for decades. In 2022, the club marked its 145th anniversary with its own tournament – a continuity that few clubs in the German-speaking world can match.

The city's more recent club history is also marked by longevity: both Grazer Schachfreunde (1920) and Schachklub Styria TU Graz (1928) have existed for over a hundred years and today rank among the largest clubs in Austria, with active team play up to the Bundesliga Mitte. Anyone playing at the Gasthaus Rudolf on a Tuesday today is continuing a tradition that goes back to 1877.

From 1877 to today: Graz chess tradition you can touch

Anyone who has played with borrowed equipment at a Graz club night quickly notices the difference to a well-made set of their own. For a regular game night, our handcrafted wooden sets are a good fit – solid wood, visible grain, pieces with noticeable weight. Anyone wanting to honor the 145-year history of the Grazer Schachgesellschaft will find boards with character and patina among our collectibles. And for a gift to a club member after a tournament win, it's worth looking at our engraved sets: a dedication in the wood outlasts any trophy. Soho Chess is a Berlin brand. Take a look around.
