Playing Chess in Basel: Clubs and Tournaments

Basel's chess clubs date back to the 1930s: SC Basel Nord was founded in 1936 and Schachverein Gundeldingen in 1948 – both still play regularly today. This guide collects what is actually accessible in today's club scene. Where something could not be verified, it is not listed here.

Chess clubs in Basel

The Nordwestschweizer Schachverband (Northwestern Switzerland Chess Federation) runs the clubs in the region. The following selection shows clubs whose game night is publicly listed. A dash means the club does not publish the time permanently, so it's worth checking the club's website.

Club District Game night
Schachverein Gundeldingen Basel Gundeldingen Monday from 7:00 pm
Schachverein Ladja Basel – –

The complete list of all member clubs is kept by the Nordwestschweizer Schachverband. Please check each club's website for current dates – game nights regularly shift during school holidays.

A note for a first visit: Schachverein Gundeldingen, founded in 1948, plays on Mondays on Laufenstrasse, easily reached by tram 15/16 from Heiliggeistkirche, and explicitly welcomes players of all strengths. Schachverein Ladja Basel trains at the Hotel Rheinfelderhof and, by its own account, caters to beginners and advanced players alike. SC Basel Nord, founded in 1936 and with members from around 17 nations, rounds off Basel's club scene as a neighbourhood club rich in tradition.

Playing chess outdoors: chess tables and meeting spots

A municipal directory of public outdoor chess tables could not be confirmed for Basel. The most reliable way to find an open game remains the club evening, above all the Monday session at Schachverein Gundeldingen.

Anyone wanting to play on the go is best served by a foldable travel set that fits in any bag and is ready to use at almost any table. Basel is also so close to the French and German borders that it can be worth looking across the border for tournaments or club activities – the Nordwestschweizer Schachverband regularly cooperates with neighbouring regions.

Tournaments and open events

In September, the Nordwestschweizer Schachverband organizes the Northwestern Switzerland Individual Championship (NEM), whose rounds are played over several weeks at changing club venues across the region. In addition, Basel's clubs are active with teams in the regional leagues.

Anyone entering a tournament for the first time should know beforehand what equipment is required. The dimensions are not a matter of taste but are regulated – see our article on the official tournament chess standards.

Chess for children and teenagers

Schachverein Gundeldingen offers its own chess course for children and teenagers aged 6 to 16, on Mondays from 6:15 to 7:00 pm, right before the adult game night – for around 90 francs including materials, with registration through the club. The Schulschachprofis are also active at Basel schools with their own location (KSC Basel), bringing the game closer to children within their school classes.

Getting started at home requires little at first: a board of a sensible size and pieces that smaller hands can grip well. Which square size suits which king height is covered in our article on chessboard size.

Basel and chess history

Unlike in Zurich or Vienna, Basel's documented chess history is above all one of the 20th century: SC Basel Nord was founded in 1936 and has since survived several moves, mergers and even changes of sport – today the club describes itself as a "neighbourhood club that carries Basel in its heart", with members from around 17 nations. Schachverein Gundeldingen followed in 1948 and has been playing without interruption at the same address in the Basel district of the same name for more than 75 years.

This continuity across two generations shaped by the world wars – or, in Gundeldingen's case, beginning directly afterwards – still shapes Basel's club landscape today: both traditional clubs remain active, open to new members and firmly rooted in their respective neighbourhoods. The fact that SC Basel Nord today has members from around 17 nations also shows how a traditional neighbourhood club has changed with the city itself over the decades without giving up its roots.
